Brisbane is primed and ready for a blockbuster month of major events and exhibitions, which will provide a vital boost to the city’s hospitality, retail and service industries and give locals more to see and do in the city.

The city’s month of May-jor Events includes the inaugural NRL Magic Round Brisbane and the Brisbane Truck Show, which together are set to inject $100 million into the city’s economy.

Deputy Mayor Krista Adams welcomed both the Brisbane Truck Show and NRL Magic Round Brisbane, which add to our city’s rich calendar of events and draw in thousands of locals who would enjoy these feature events.

“Hosting the Brisbane Truck Show and the inaugural NRL Magic Round Brisbane enhances Brisbane’s reputation as a destination for world-class events, sport fixtures and exhibitions, and will give residents plenty to do over the next two weeks,” Cr Adams said.

“The city is committed to attracting major events, which have a significant impact on our local economy, and brings in extra cash which feeds straight into the bottom line of dozens of businesses around Brisbane.

“Events such as NRL Magic Round Brisbane and the Brisbane Truck Show shine a spotlight on our city, draw interstate and international visitors, fill hotel rooms and deliver flow-on economic benefits for Brisbane’s tourism, retail and hospitality sectors.”

“Major events are a key growth sector for Brisbane and we’re committed to attracting and growing our calendar of events in line with the recommendations from the Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan.”

Ahead of the two events, truck driver and Newcastle Knights fan Glen Schmidtke will be driving a co-branded truck and trailer up to Brisbane from Melbourne, as he begins his road to the Magic Round.

The biennial Brisbane Truck Show is run by Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia – HVIA, as part of Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry Week.

HVIA Chief Executive Todd Hacking said the show, which has been running in Brisbane since 1968, is the largest transport event in the southern hemisphere.

“The Brisbane Truck Show has a proud history of showcasing the heavy vehicle industry’s values around safety, innovation, sustainability, careers, knowledge and community, while broadening awareness about the industry’s vital role within the community,’ Mr Hacking said.

“Australian Heavy Vehicle Industry Week is a celebration of Australia’s thriving and robust local industry, which employs more than 36,000 people and manufactures, services and repairs some of the world’s most efficient, safe, innovative and technologically advanced vehicles.

“The Brisbane Truck Show is the centerpiece of AHVI Week, which will feature over 300 of the biggest names in transport, including iconic brands such as Kenworth, Mack Trucks, Iveco and Freightliner, with this year’s Show expected to attract more than 35,000 visitors, and thousands more across South Bank.”

NRL Magic Round Brisbane will bring the competition’s 16 clubs and almost 300 players to Suncorp Stadium for an action-packed four days of football, in what will be the year’s largest gathering of Australian rugby league stars.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he was looking forward to the upcoming festivities in Brisbane.

“This will be one of the real highlights of our season,” Mr Greenberg said.

“Magic Round will give us something quite unique and innovative – all 16 of our Teams playing in Brisbane over the one weekend. This presents for us huge opportunities to think differently.

“It is a first for the game and will be a real celebration.

“It will be fantastic to see Brisbane as a whole – and so many other people coming from long distances – embrace the concept.”

AEG Ogden Chairman & CEO Harvey Lister said he was delighted his teams at both Suncorp Stadium and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre had been instrumental in securing these blockbuster events for Queensland in conjunction with Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing.

“These events demand world class venues and our teams at Suncorp Stadium and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre are ready to deliver,” Mr Lister said.

“AEG Ogden venues host a wide range of major events, including professional sports, live concerts, conventions, exhibitions, and performing arts, and we’re proud to play our part which makes a significant economic impact for the city of Brisbane.”

NRL Magic Round Brisbane will take place at Suncorp Stadium from 9 to 12 May and the Brisbane Truck Show will be held at the Brisbane Exhibition & Convention Centre from May 16 to 19.
