Proving its climate is right for business, Brisbane has had a successful summer of business event bid wins, set to inject millions of dollars into the economy over the next five years.
The city’s economic development board, Brisbane Marketing, partnered with the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on the majority of its 19 business event bids over summer, worth $27.7 million for the economy.
The events secured cover the medical and health sciences, education, technology, law, construction and energy industries, and include the International Society of Posture & Gait Research World Congress 2021 and the International Peptide Symposium 2021.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the value of business events won over summer reflected Brisbane Marketing’s strong partnership with the Centre and the city’s growing reputation as an events city.
“Business events secured over the summer months such as key medical and technology conferences will attract over 11,800 delegates including world-renowned experts to Brisbane through to 2024,” Cr Quirk said.
“Strengths in research and innovation, globally-acclaimed event facilities, an infrastructure boom and our warm and welcoming people all add to Brisbane’s appeal as a place to meet.
“Bidding for business events is important for Brisbane as every event held in the city supports our local tourism, hospitality, retail and service sectors, and builds our knowledge economy.”
Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre General Manager Bob O’Keefe said the Centre invests significantly in developing major bid opportunities for the city which is key to winning these high yield conferences for Brisbane and Queensland.
“This is a great result and comes at a time when the Centre is on track for its best ever year, surpassing the success of the 2014 G20 year,” Mr O’Keefe said.
“The Centre is set to host a record 166 conferences this Financial Year with a further 429 future conference bookings through to 2029.”
2019 is also shaping up to be big for Brisbane in terms of business events set to take place. Brisbane Marketing worked with partners to secure 70 conferences for the city, which will attract around 34,800 delegates.
