Spring delivers $29 million conference boon for Brisbane

29 August 2019

Brisbane’s business events scene will be blooming this Spring with the city set to welcome over 13,300 delegates for conferences worth $28.7 million to the local economy.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the city’s economic development board Brisbane Marketing worked with partners including the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) and Tourism and Events Queensland to secure 27 business events through to end-November.

“Spring is the season of growth so it is fitting that Brisbane will host discussions on new developments and ideas in areas including tissue engineering, paleontology, education, youth mental health, design, science, interactive technology and more,” Cr Schrinner said.

“These national and international business events will attract thousands of experts, researchers, professionals and educators at the forefront of global research and practice.

“This is great news for Brisbane as each business event will run over multiple days, generating about $29 million for the economy and supporting our venues, hotels, hospitality and service businesses.

“Beyond the immediate tourism benefits, business events can leave lasting legacies thanks to knowledge exchange, research and business partnerships sparked by meetings of the minds.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the Queensland Government provided support for events because they create jobs in the local tourism sector.

“Not only are business travellers high-value travellers who spend significantly on their trips, but business events are a wonderful platform to showcase our unique tourism offerings and encourage repeat visitation,” Ms Jones said.

“Through Tourism and Events Queensland we support events that drive visitation, generate economic benefit and support local jobs in the tourism and events industry.

“By working closely with partners we can ensure we attract high quality business events to Brisbane that deliver benefits for everyone.”
